Legal and Regulatory Issues (31/1/19)

Q: Evaluate legal and regulatory issues associated with media products Censorship: Banning certain products 5 films that I think are violent: 1. The Green Inferno 2. Evil Dead (2013) 3. The Human Centipede 4. I Spit On Your Grave Age Ratings: The Green Inferno: 18 (Cannibalism, violence, gory scenes, murder) Evil Dead: 18 (Detailed gory scenes, violence, murder) The Human Centipede: 18 (Detailed gory scenes, violence, abduction) I Spit On Your Grave: 18 (Rape, murder, gory scenes, violence) Do I think the ratings for these movies are a ppropriate? Yes, I do. These movies are all horror movies and horrors are either rated 15 or 18, depending on the level of violence. Moving on to The Green Inferno. The age rating is very appropriate. When I think of gory horror movies that really made me disgusted and somewhat scared, I think of this movie. The Evil Dead rating is appropriate too, the level of violence and gore is high which is why I think the rating ...

Genre Task

Image
Genre Task Using the theories and ideas put forward by some/all of the academics covered, create a multi media film/tv guide to a genre of your choice. Aim to provide examples that show: Use of generic conventions (Narrative, character, iconography, mis-en-scene, etc) Examples that evidence audience pleasures  Examples that demonstrate problems in categorization (elements that perhaps aren't typical)  -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Key Academics Theories: Daniel Chandler: Chandler sees genre as too restricting. Genres are typically based on a type of text which classifies different types of media. It is impossible for a piece for a piece to belong to no genre at all. Chandler states that defining genres can be problematic, but even if we were to abandon genre, people would still categorise texts in real life. Genre creates order.   Creat...

Magazine Research

Niche Audience CAR Magazine: CAR magazine is a popular monthly issue automobile magazine among car aficionados. Every issue is packed with photography, interviews, reviews and much more.  The reason I titled this specific magazine niche is because of its target audience, car lovers. This magazine is targeted to a specific audience which is what differs it from a mainstream magazine which would target its self to the general public. The contents within this magazine would most likely interest people who are very interested in cars, seeing as the whole magazine is solely about cars.  Empire: Empire Magazine is one of the worlds biggest movie magazines. Within this magazine you get an exclusive look at new films (in theatres and not), interviews, and much more. The reason I labeled this magazine as niche is because of its contents, style and it's audience  This is a movie based magazine, aiming itself towards people in...

Print Media Analysis

Print Media Analysis Taylor swift's cover for British Vogue January  2018 1. Analysis of denoted elements using the correct terminology. Taylor Swift's cover for British Vogue is very striking and screams 'dare to be different'. As you look at this cover you see that it is very odd-looking and not something you'd see on magazines such as Billboard, Glamour, or any other magazines that present a very simple cover on their monthly issues. A mix of art and aesthetics is popular among magazines that reach for a rather grungy and alternative vibe to their covers, and this is just what Vogue did.  Taylor is seen wearing a very somber — yet compelling red dress with small black dots in the forefront of a rainy-day-cloud colour. This is very pleasing to the eye and the eye appealing red dress stands out greatly from the background. 2. Analysis of the possible connotations of the denoted elements - identify the symbolic messages on the cover and ...

Hypodermic Needle Theory

The Hypodermic Needle theory, also known as  the hypodermic-syringe model ,  transmission-belt model , or  magic bullet theory is a form of communication implying that a message is directly received and accepted by the person on the receiving end. The model was originally established in behaviourism, the understanding of the behaviour of humans/animals, and was considered outdated for a huge portion of time, however   big data  analytics-based  mass customisation refreshed and re-established the idea. In other words, this theory states that implied mass media has a fast, immediate and powerful effect on an audience.  Many factors contributed to the beginning of the theory of communication throughout the '40s and '50s, some of these were: The rise of television and radio in the 1940s and 1950s The development of industries such as advertising/propaganda Hitler's control over mass media during ...
