Taylor swift's cover for British Vogue January
2018
1. Analysis of denoted elements using the correct terminology.
Taylor Swift's cover for British Vogue is very striking and screams 'dare to be different'. As you look at this cover you see that it is very odd-looking and not something you'd see on magazines such as Billboard, Glamour, or any other magazines that present a very simple cover on their monthly issues. A mix of art and aesthetics is popular among magazines that reach for a rather grungy and alternative vibe to their covers, and this is just what Vogue did.
Taylor is seen wearing a very somber—yet compelling red dress with small black dots in the forefront of a rainy-day-cloud colour. This is very pleasing to the eye and the eye appealing red dress stands out greatly from the background.
2. Analysis of the possible connotations of the denoted elements - identify the symbolic messages on the cover and identify and explain examples of anchorage.
One of the first words that we see as we look at this cover is "TAYLOR REMADE", this hints to a possible change in her herself/her attitude. The dark theme that British Vogue went for signals that she has became a much darker person since past events that ultimately 'ruined' her reputation, which involving her being humiliated and exposed by Kim Kardashian and Kanye West. Knowing her history with her reputation, you can get a sense that this cover and headline is her way of saying to the general public that she is not the innocent, soft and sweet girl she once was. She is a stronger person and a few incidents will not stop her from fighting back. The hair, makeup and outfit emit a grunge-y vibe and almost give of the impression that she is going through dark times in her life which she chooses to express via a bad-ass persona.
3. Who is this publication for and how do we know?
This publication is aimed towards people who are fans/interested in Taylor Swift and her story. We know this because British Vogue knew that plastering an image of one of the biggest pop stars of this generation would catch some eyes, and largely because of her inactivity on the scene at that moment of time. Taylor had recently just dropped an album at the time of this magazine issue release but she was still MIA on the media scene, mainly because the media haven't been very kind to her in the past—labelling her as a 'serial dater', a snake, a backstabber, etc. Vogue's main target audience for this specific issue were the people who were desperate for new Taylor Swift related content.
