Web 2.0 is the second stage of development of the internet, emphasizing the change from static web pages to user-generated content and the growth of social media. The popular term was popularised by Darcy DiNucci in 1999 and popularized years later by Tim O'Reilly and Dale Dougherty at the O'Reilly Media Web 2.0 Conference in 2004. Advertising was reborn, all thanks to Web 2.0. Web 2.0 created a new generation of advertising and marketing and has sprouted drastically since it starts in 2004. Since then, advertising through social media has become a huge success and is one of the most popular and most effective ways to advertise your product. Evolution of Advertising 1835: The creation of the automobile increases the number of billboards in the U.S. 1882: The first electric sign is made in New York’s Times Square. 1905: Cigarette advertising from silent movie star Fatty Arbuckle. 1920: Frank Conrad creates the words first commercial radio station. 1939: World War II propaganda. 1941: The worlds’ first TV commercial airs on Bulova Watch. 1950: The first political advertisement airs. 1957: The first TV jingle airs for Mr Clean, which is still used today. 1970: TV infomercials begin. 1980: Calvin Klein sparks controversy with Brooke Shields starring in a ‘sexy’ commercial. 1981: MTV launches, advertising music 24/7 1994: Hotwire website launches, and banner ads begin. 1995 – 2000: $8.2 billion invested in online ads. 2002: Apple releases their silhouette ad.  2008 : Ads come to social media.
